Etymology

Gheată entered Romanian from Italian ghetta, plural ghette, which meant a gaiter or spat, a cloth or leather piece covering the ankle and lower leg. The Italian word itself goes back to French guêtre, with the same meaning. In Romanian the sense narrowed from a leg covering to the ankle boot itself, the item of footwear that eventually replaced the separate gaiter.
