Trezi is formed from the Romanian adjective treaz ("awake, alert") plus the verbal suffix -i that turns adjectives into fourth-conjugation verbs, the same pattern seen in words like curăți from curat. The deeper origin of treaz itself is not settled: Romanian etymological dictionaries mark it as uncertain, and some scholars propose a link to a pre-Latin Balkan substrate rather than to Latin.
