Umed comes from Latin umidus, meaning damp or moist, itself built on the verb umere, to be wet. Romanian inherited the word directly from spoken Latin, which is why it keeps the vowel-initial form also seen in Italian umido. French humide and Spanish húmedo show a silent h, added later under the influence of classical Latin spelling rather than pronunciation.
