Etymology

Romanian magazin came through French magasin and Italian magazzino. Both trace back to Arabic makhāzin, the plural of makhzan, meaning storehouse. The word spread across Europe through Mediterranean trade and Ottoman contact. Romanian kept the concrete sense of a shop, while English magazine drifted toward a storehouse of articles and pictures, a periodical.
