Etymology
"Ascult" is the first-person singular present of "a asculta", inherited from Latin auscultare, "to listen attentively, to heed". Latin auscultare joins auris, "ear", with an element tied to the old Indo-European word for hearing, the same root behind Greek kleos, "fame" (literally, what people hear about you). Romanian kept this everyday verb for listening and obeying, while the classical verb audire survives only in "a auzi", to perceive sound. English later borrowed the same Latin verb directly as the clinical term "auscultate", to listen to the body with a stethoscope.
