Etymology

"Urăște" comes from the verb "a urî", which Romanian inherited from Latin "horrire", meaning to bristle or to shudder with dread. Over time the sense of physical shuddering narrowed to a strong emotional aversion, giving modern Romanian "a urî", to hate. The same root also produced the adjective "urât", which shifted further to mean ugly.
