Etymology
Vânătoare descends from Latin venatoria, the feminine form of venatorius, 'of hunting,' built on the verb venari, 'to hunt.' Romanian kept this form as a noun for the activity itself, while the related agent noun venator gave Romanian vânător, 'hunter.' The Latin verb venari has been traced by etymologists to the Proto-Indo-European root *wenh₁-, 'to strive for, wish, desire,' which also underlies Latin venus ('love, desire') and English wish and win.
