Etymology

Romanian "a studia" entered the language in the nineteenth century as part of a wave of Western Romance borrowings that modernized Romanian vocabulary. It comes most directly from French "étudier" and the Latin noun "studium" (application, zeal), and it exists alongside the older native verb "a învăța" (to learn). "A studia" is generally used for formal or sustained academic study, while "a învăța" covers learning more broadly.
