آسِف is the active participle of the verb أَسِفَ, 'to grieve' or 'to be sorry.' Both grow from the triconsonantal root أ-س-ف, which carries the sense of regret and sorrow. The same root yields the noun أَسَف, 'regret,' and the obituary phrase المأسوف عليه, 'the lamented one.' The literal force is 'one who feels regret,' which narrowed in daily speech to the plain 'sorry.'
