Etymology
أَقْسَم is the Form IV verb of the Semitic root q-s-m, whose core sense is to divide or apportion. From the related noun قَسَم, meaning oath, the verb came to mean to swear. The link runs through the old practice of allotting lots and setting a portion apart, an act bound up with binding declarations. The same root surfaces in other Semitic languages with senses of dividing and divination by lots.
