Etymology

نادي comes from the Semitic root n-d-w, which means to call or to gather. A نادي was first a place where people assembled, such as the council house of pre-Islamic Mecca known as دار الندوة. Modern Arabic narrowed the sense to a club, an organized place where members meet for sport, culture, or leisure.
