Etymology
كِفايَة comes from the Semitic root k-f-y, which means to suffice or be enough. It is the verbal noun of كَفَى, 'to be enough,' so it names the abstract state of sufficiency. In Islamic law it appears in the term فَرْض كِفايَة, a duty the whole community must see done, though performance by some discharges it for all.
