ضَرَب comes from the Semitic root ض-ر-ب, whose core sense is striking or beating. Arabic stretched it into a wide family of idioms: to give an example, to set a date, to multiply numbers, to impose a siege. The same root yields the noun ضَرْب (a blow, or multiplication) and the Form VIII verb اضطرب (to be agitated).
