Etymology

Mīlād derives from the triliteral Semitic root و-ل-د (w-l-d), 'to give birth, to beget.' It is a noun of time and instance built on the pattern مِفعال. The original wāw shifted to yāʾ after the kasra, so مِوْلاد became مِيلاد. The same root produces walad 'child' and wilāda 'childbirth.'
