مُتَأَخِّر is the active participle of the Form V verb تَأَخَّرَ, 'to fall behind' or 'to be delayed.' It rests on the Semitic root ʾ-kh-r, which carries the sense of afterness and lateness, the same root behind آخِر, 'last,' and مُؤَخَّر, 'rear.' The Form V pattern adds a reflexive shade, so the word names someone who holds himself back or ends up behind. The same root recurs across Semitic languages with the meaning 'after.'
