Etymology
نام comes from the Semitic root n-w-m, which carries the sense of sleep and slumber. The same root appears across the Semitic languages, including Hebrew and Aramaic. In Arabic the weak middle radical و surfaces as a long ā, so the past tense is نَامَ. The related noun نَوْم, meaning sleep, keeps the original و visible.
