Etymology
نَقْد comes from the Arabic root n-q-d, whose first sense was sorting good coins from bad and paying in cash. From the idea of examining coins closely, the meaning widened to weighing the merits of a text or an argument. Modern Arabic keeps both threads: ready money on one side, literary and intellectual criticism on the other.
