جُنْدِيّ is a relational form (nisba) built on جُنْد, meaning army or troops. جُنْد entered Arabic early and is widely held to come from Middle Persian gund, an army or band of fighters. The suffix ـِيّ turns army into one of the army, hence a soldier.
