Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ʾ-th-r (ء ث ر), which carries the sense of following after something or tracing a path. From this root Arabic built a family of words about marks left behind, influence, and the study of the past. The plural form, āthār, became the standard term for archaeological remains and antiquities across the Arab world.
