Etymology
مَسَح comes from the Semitic triliteral root m-s-ḥ, meaning to wipe, stroke, or pass a hand or cloth over a surface. The same root gives Arabic words for mopping, surveying land (measuring by passing over it), and shoe-shining. Hebrew has a cognate root, מָשַׁח (mashach), meaning to anoint, which lies behind the title Messiah, and Arabic's own المسيح (al-Masih) shares this root. Arabic is a Semitic language, not an Indo-European one, so it has no PIE root.
