Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root n-ṣ-ṣ, whose base verb نَصَّ originally meant to raise or lift something up, as in raising the head or neck. The sense shifted from physical raising to making something stand out clearly, and from there to stating something explicitly in words. نَصّ as a noun settled into the meaning of an explicit written or spoken text, the exact wording that a law, book, or scripture presents.
