Etymology

The word comes from the Arabic triliteral root ج-ذ-ب (jadhaba), meaning to pull or draw something toward oneself. Its active participle جاذب (jādhib, "pulling, attracting") takes the abstract-noun suffix ية, giving جاذبية, literally "the quality of attracting." Modern Standard Arabic settled on it as the standard scientific term for physical gravity during the nineteenth and twentieth century scientific revival, while it kept its older, everyday sense of personal charm or appeal.
