Etymology
حَدِيدِيّ is a nisba adjective, built by adding the relative suffix ـِيّ to the noun حَدِيد ("iron"). حَدِيد itself comes from the Semitic root ح-د-د, a root tied to sharpness and hardness, since iron was prized for making sharp, hard blades and tools. Arabic uses this same suffix pattern to turn many material nouns into adjectives, such as ذَهَبِيّ (golden) from ذَهَب (gold).
