Etymology
Qurāba comes from the Semitic root q-r-b, which carries the core sense of nearness or proximity. Arabic built an abstract noun on the fuʿāla pattern to turn that physical closeness into a social one: being near in blood or family line. The same root gives Arabic its ordinary word for a relative, qarīb, literally 'a near one'.
