Etymology

أَدَّى is the Form II (faʿʿala) verb built on the triliteral root أ-د-ي, whose base sense is to deliver, discharge, or pay something to its proper place. The doubled middle radical gives the transitive reading: to make a duty or task reach completion. From the same root come the nouns أَدَاء (performance, payment) and تَأْدِية (rendering, carrying out). The frequent construction أَدَّى إِلَى extends the literal sense of delivery into the figurative one of leading to a result.
