Etymology
The noun comes from the triconsonantal Semitic root ج-س-د (j-s-d). Classical lexicons also tie the root to saffron and to congealed blood, a deep red coloring. From this the word settled into the sense of the material body, often a body emptied of life. It stands beside جِسْم (jism), which names body or mass in a more general way.
