Etymology

Arabic borrowed mūsīqā from Greek mousikē, 'the art of the Muses', most likely through Syriac during the early translation movement. Medieval scholars such as al-Farabi used it for the theory and practice of sound and melody. The Greek term traces to Mousa, the Muse, whose own origin is debated among linguists. The same Greek source gave English 'music' and Latin 'musica'.
