Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root ص-ر-ر (ṣ-r-r), whose core sense is to bind or press something tightly. The Form IV pattern أَفْعَلَ turns this physical sense into a mental one: to hold firmly to a position, that is, to insist. The doubled root consonants merge into the shadda seen in أَصَرَّ.
