Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic triliteral root ب-ث-ث, whose basic sense is to spread, scatter, or disperse something widely. Classical Arabic used it for spreading news, secrets, or inner grief, as in the Quranic verse where Jacob speaks of pouring out his anguish. Modern Arabic extended the same root to mass media, so بَثّ came to mean the transmission or broadcast of a radio, television, or online signal.
