Etymology
The root ض ح و concerns daylight and the brightness of mid-morning, seen in ضُحَى, the forenoon. The Form IV verb أَضْحَى originally meant to reach or enter that time of day. Like أَصْبَحَ (to enter the morning) and أَمْسَى (to enter the evening), it shifted from a time-of-day verb into a general auxiliary meaning to become. This is why grammarians class it among كان وأخواتها, the sisters of كان.
