Etymology

مُهَذَّب is the passive participle of the Form II verb هذَّب (haddhaba), built on the triliteral root ه-ذ-ب. The root's base sense is to trim or prune, as a gardener trims a plant into shape. Arabic speakers extended that image to people: to trim someone's character or manners is to refine and discipline them. مُهَذَّب thus literally means one who has been trimmed into good shape, in practice, someone polite and well brought up.
