Etymology
Tashkhīṣ comes from the Arabic root sh-kh-ṣ, which underlies shakhṣ, meaning a person or a distinct figure. The base verb shakhaṣa meant to stare fixedly or to stand out visibly. The intensive Form II verb shakhkhaṣa shifted this into to make distinct, to pinpoint, and by extension to diagnose. Tashkhīṣ is the verbal noun of that Form II verb: the act of picking something out clearly.
