Etymology
جوهر entered Arabic as a loanword from Persian گوهر (gōhar), which meant both gem and origin or essence. Classical Arabic philosophers adopted it to translate the Greek term ousia, giving it a technical sense of substance or inner nature alongside its older meaning of a precious stone. The word later passed from Arabic into Ottoman Turkish and Urdu, where it kept both the concrete and abstract senses.
