The word comes from the Arabic triliteral root ر-ه-ب (r-h-b), whose base verb رهب means to fear or to stand in dread and awe. A راهب is literally one who lives in that state, a man given over to reverent fear of God. Several scholars trace the specific monastic sense to Syriac rahbā, a Christian term for monk, since organized monasticism reached pre-Islamic Arabia through Syriac-speaking Christian communities.
