Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root ل-ح-ق (l-ḥ-q), whose core sense is catching up with or following after something. The base verb لَحِقَ means to overtake or reach. The Form IV pattern أَفْعَلَ turns this into a causative: to make one thing follow or join another, hence to attach or append.
