Etymology

The verb comes from the triliteral Semitic root ح-ف-ظ (ḥ-f-ẓ), which carries the sense of guarding, keeping, and holding in memory. حافَظَ is the Form III (فاعَل) verb built on that root, where the long vowel after the first radical adds a sense of sustained or continuous action. The same root gives حِفْظ (memorization) and حافِظ, the title for a person who has memorized the whole Quran.
