Etymology
حِفْظ comes from the Semitic triliteral root ح ف ظ (ḥ-f-ẓ), whose core sense is to guard, keep, or watch over. حِفْظ is the maṣdar, or verbal noun, of the verb حَفِظَ (ḥafiẓa), to keep or preserve. From this base sense of guarding something, Arabic extended the word to cover memorization, since committing a text to memory is a way of keeping it safe.
