Etymology
Sāḥil is an active-participle noun from the root s-ḥ-l, tied to the verb saḥala, which means to scrape, file, or plane something smooth. Arabic lexicographers explain the coast as the place worn and scraped by the constant motion of waves, the same way a file abrades wood or metal. The word later gave its plural, sawāḥil, to two well-known place and language names: the Sahel region south of the Sahara and Swahili, both borrowed through the idea of a coast or border.
