Etymology
The word comes from Almāniyā, the Arabic name for Germany, plus the suffix -iyy that forms adjectives of relation. Almāniyā itself derives from the Latin Alemannia, the land of the Alemanni, a confederation of Germanic tribes. Several European languages took the country's name from the same source, including French Allemagne and Spanish Alemania.
