Etymology
مَأْلُوف is the passive participle of the verb أَلِفَ, "to be familiar with, to grow accustomed to." The root أ-ل-ف carries the idea of joining, keeping company, and habituation. So a مَأْلُوف thing is one people have joined themselves to and no longer notice as strange.
