Etymology
The word is the passive participle of the Form V verb توقّع (tawaqqaʿa), meaning to expect or anticipate. That verb builds on the triliteral root و-ق-ع (w-q-ʿ), whose base sense is to fall or to occur. The reflexive Form V shifts the meaning toward mentally anticipating an event before it happens. The mu- prefix and the doubled middle radical mark the participle as passive, so the word describes the thing that is awaited.
