Etymology

The verb is the Form V (reflexive) derivation of the Semitic root ط-ل-ع, whose base sense is rising or coming into view, as when the sun climbs above the horizon. From that image of upward emergence the reflexive form takes on the meaning of lifting one's gaze, and by extension looking ahead and aspiring. The metaphor of raised eyes tracks the shift from physical sight to hope.
