Etymology
The word is a nisba adjective built on the triliteral root ش-ر-ق, which carries the sense of the sun rising. From that root come شَرْق, the east, and شُرُوق, sunrise. Adding the nisba suffix ـِيّ turns the noun for east into the adjective 'eastern'.
