Etymology
The root h-d-r originally described a rumbling or roaring sound, as of thunder or a camel's grunt. From this came the sense of something falling into void or silence, and so 'hadar' came to mean waste or forfeiture, as in the old legal phrase 'his blood is forfeit,' meaning no one owes retribution for his death. The Form IV verb 'ahdara' is the causative: to cause something to become void, wasted, or forfeited. This is a native Semitic development, not a borrowing.
