Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root س-خ-ف (s-kh-f), whose base sense is thinness or flimsiness, as in cloth worn so thin it loses its strength. Classical Arabic extended this physical sense to the mind: a person or idea described as سخيف is thin in judgment, hence foolish or silly. سخافة is the abstract noun built from that adjective, naming the quality of foolishness itself.
