Etymology
The word entered Arabic from Byzantine Greek στόλος (stolos), meaning an expedition or a body of ships sent out together. Arab navies borrowed the term along with Byzantine maritime know-how in the early Islamic centuries, and the Arabic form settled into the native فُعْلُول noun pattern. From there it kept its narrow military sense of an organized group of warships, later widening to any organized group of vessels or vehicles.
