Etymology
Khal‘ is the verbal noun (masdar) of the native Arabic root kh-l-ʿ, which covers the basic act of stripping or pulling something off. From this core sense Arabic extended it to pulling out a tooth, popping a joint out of its socket, and stripping a ruler of his position. The root is Semitic, not Indo-European, so it has no Proto-Indo-European ancestor.
