Etymology
إِشارَة is the noun from the Form IV verb أَشارَ, to point or indicate. It comes from the triliteral root ش-و-ر, which also yields words for consultation and advice, such as شورى and مَشورَة. The sense runs from a physical gesture to an abstract sign or an electronic signal. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it carries no Proto-Indo-European root.
