Etymology
جامِعَة comes from the Semitic root ج م ع (j-m-ʿ), 'to gather.' It is the feminine active participle of جَمَعَ, 'to gather,' so it names a thing that brings people together. The masculine form جامِع became the word for a congregational mosque, the place where worshippers assemble. In the modern period the feminine form was fixed on the institution that gathers students and fields of study: the university.
