Etymology
This is a Form VI verb built on the triliteral Semitic root ع-م-ل (ʿ-m-l), meaning to work or to do. The Form VI pattern taFāʿala adds a sense of reciprocity, so the verb means to work or deal back and forth with one another. It is the mutual counterpart of Form III عامَلَ, to treat or deal with someone.
